The Silent Treatment: Is it Emotional Abuse?

High-Profile Relationships and the Public Conversation

While the silent treatment is a deeply personal experience, public discussions around the relationships of celebrities and public figures have brought terms like “stonewalling” and “emotional abuse” into the mainstream. These high-profile cases, often documented through court filings and public statements, provide tangible, if painful, examples of how these dynamics can manifest.

Case Study: The Depp-Heard Defamation Trial

Perhaps no recent event brought the language of toxic relationships to the forefront more than the highly publicized defamation trial between actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard in 2022. The proceedings were broadcast live, and news outlets like the Associated Press and Reuters provided daily, detailed coverage. During the trial, both parties accused the other of various forms of abuse.

One of the concepts discussed was “stonewalling,” a term popularized by renowned relationship researcher Dr. John Gottman. Stonewalling is an absolute refusal to consider a partner’s perspective, and it often involves emotional or physical withdrawal—a behavior closely related to the silent treatment. In testimony, Depp described periods where he would attempt to disengage from escalating arguments by locking himself in a separate room to de-escalate. Heard’s legal team, in turn, characterized this withdrawal as a form of emotional abandonment and neglect. Conversely, Depp’s team argued that Heard would escalate conflicts when he tried to withdraw.

Regardless of the jury’s verdict, the trial served as a massive public forum on the vocabulary of relationship dysfunction. Viewers around the world heard expert witnesses and the principals themselves describe patterns of behavior that many recognized in their own lives. It highlighted the complexity of identifying the aggressor versus the reactor in a volatile relationship and showed how the same action—withdrawing from a fight—could be interpreted as either a necessary act of self-preservation or a punitive act of emotional abuse, depending on the context and intent.

Case Study: Dynamics within the Royal Family

The British Royal Family, an institution built on tradition and a “never complain, never explain” ethos, has also been the subject of discussions about emotional dynamics, including ostracism. In recent years, public statements from family members have offered a glimpse into the pressures of life within “The Firm.”

In his 2023 memoir, Spare, and in interviews promoting it, Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, described feeling isolated and unsupported by his family and the institution, particularly concerning the media’s treatment of his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex. While he did not use the term “silent treatment” in a clinical sense, he detailed instances of his concerns being dismissed and his family allegedly refusing to engage in conversations about critical issues. The couple’s famous 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey also contained claims of being ignored and left unprotected. For more background on the family structure, the official Royal.UK website provides context on the institution itself.

These public accounts, which represent one side of a complex family dynamic, illustrate how withholding communication and emotional support can be perceived as a powerful form of rejection, even within one of the world’s most famous families. It underscores the idea that being “frozen out” or ostracized is a painful experience, whether it happens in a suburban home or behind palace walls. These examples, covered extensively by global media, have contributed to a broader cultural understanding of how silence and emotional distance can be used to maintain power structures and enforce conformity.
