Set some personal limits for yourself.
Just think about the type of behavior you’re willing to tolerate and draw the line there. Setting clear boundaries will give you the power and enable you to offer further assistance when they might need it without allowing them to take advantage of you.
Also, think of how others tried to manipulate you in the past and what they wanted to get from you in the first place. Will you tolerate any of these behaviors again and again, or are you ready to “draw the line”?
It could be useful to keep a journal of your personal thoughts, especially as you go through this very complicated process. Writing down these boundaries will help you assess situations much better and also strengthen your self-esteem.
Stay focused
Here’s the thing: when you stand up for yourself, manipulators could use evasive and diversionary tactics to throw you off and weaken your solutions. Don’t let them do that! Don’t allow them to sidetrack you and your progress. Make sure you stay focused on the issue you want to address, and you will soon see positive results.
