You have an identity outside of the relationship.
Codependency could easily lead to a melding of identities, and while at first it might seem nice because you seem to be blending with your partner, in the long run, it’s unhealthy.
What used to be “I” suddenly becomes “we”, but the thing is, “you” gets lost in the mix. Just remember that you are not only one half of a whole, but your very own person with passions, interests, and incredible intelligence. It is more than okay to have a sense of self completely separate from your partner.
You accept help.
It’s worth mentioning that some people are more independent, and they find it very difficult to rely on their partner in the toughest times. If you need some help, it could be a good thing to establish where your boundaries are and what you can and cannot do in order to respect them.
You might want to ask for some help with your finances, but you need space when you’re dealing with family issues. This type of balance could be a delicate tango, but in most cases, open communication also leads to a smoother rhythm.
