Watch for red flags when dating a widower.
It can be challenging for a widow or widower to feel okay introducing a new partner to friends and family. Or, for some, even to be seen in public. There’s usually a concern that people will think they must not have loved their partner if they’re seen dating someone new.
While taking some time to get used to the idea of a new partner is expected, a few telltale signs suggest that the widower isn’t quite ready to date. Some examples might be:
- A lot of time has passed, and you’re never invited to your new partner’s family gatherings because you’re told, “They’re not ready to meet you.”
- You’re in a serious relationship but introduced as a “friend” to someone your partner runs into in public.
- You’re asked to hide or leave the room when someone suddenly drops by your partner’s place.
Communicate your relationship goals.
Nothing is wrong with their baggage. Your mindset towards them should be based on mutual respect, understanding, and trust. Widowers can make excellent partners. You just have to communicate with them clearly.
Find that delicate balance and ask questions to know if they see a future with you. Define your needs and relationship goals. Talk about the future when you’ve spent enough time together.
Learn more about each other’s preferences. While dating a widower, don’t expect marriage to be the result of your relationship immediately.
